Low cost and efficient system to produce electricity and heat from waste

Generating electricity and heat from waste and scraps more efficiently and cheaply thanks to a state-of-the-art system for biomass, residues and wastewater gasification patented by the ENEA Bioenergy, Biorefinery and Green Chemistry Division.

The project was designed based on the expertise acquired over the years on the various gasification technologies, particularly the so-called downdraft.

“The solutions we adopted help us to overcome several limitations inherent in the technology which affect its operating conditions”, ENEA researcher Emanuele Fanelli explained.

“In order to minimize heat dissipation and increase overall efficiency, a geometric optimization of the reaction chamber was conducted and the plant engineering underwent full automation. In addition, we introduced two innovative systems: a biomass support system to adjust process conditions, so that fuel flow is effectively regulated according to the power needs of the engine, significantly cutting consumption. The second is the fuel supply system”, Fanelli continued.

Another significant improvement is the possibility of adjusting the fuel passage section in the system: this, besides reducing consumption, offers the possibility of using a greater variety of fuels with very different energy dimensions and characteristics, ranging from sludge purification, manure, agricultural and agro-industry waste to forestry and wood processing residues, like wood chips and / or pellets.

Following these interventions the plant size and shape allow it to be built inside portable units like containers.

“Thanks to considerable simplifications implemented throughout the plant, both construction and management costs can be significantly reduced”, Fanelli concluded.
