Italian Summer Festival Season

On Sunday, 21 June, the Festival of Music will feature the first important concert with an audience after the COVID 19 emergency, besides being the beginning of the “Italian Summer Festival Season”, a suggestive tour of the principal Italian Festivals with a programme for 2020 announced to the World, thanks to the collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the ItaliaFestival Association.

The “Italian Summer Festival Season” is an international showcase of renowned festivals with a long and glorious tradition, highlighting the excellence of this country’s culture, music and performing arts and the beauty of its diverse regions.

“The Italian Festival Season – the Deputy Minister Marina Sereni said – is getting back up on its feet and, thanks to the collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with its network of Embassies, Consular Offices and Italian Institutes of Culture, and the ItaliaFestival Association will be delighting international audiences with over two weeks of high quality entertainment, which can be enjoyed across the world, free of charge, through streaming or on demand. This is a very symbolic and important moment, which marks a fresh start, not only of outdoor cultural activities but also of a system for promoting music and culture, which is absolutely necessary to leave behind the most difficult phase of the emergency and return to an everyday life of great small pleasures, such as attending a live show”.

The opening date is 21 June, with the much awaited inaugural concert of the Ravenna Festival, which will showcase the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra and the soprano Rosa Feola, conducted by Maestro Riccardo Muti at the Rocca Brancaleone Fortress. This is a very symbolic date because it coincides with the Feast Day of Music and will be the first great concert to be held in Italy with an audience, with all the safety measures in place, after the reopening of theatres and concert venues in Italy.

The summer season programme will continue with other major high-profile events featuring theatre, dance and music, across the country: the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago and Viareggio, the Ravenna Festival, the Naples Theatre Festival, the Valle d’Itria Festival, the Emilia Romagna Festival, Borgate dal vivo in Piedmont, the International Midsummer Festival at Tagliacozzo in Abruzzo, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Summer Opera Festival at Bassano del Grappa, Armonie d’arte in Calabria and the Festival of the Two Worlds in Spoleto.

The programme is sponsored by the Foreign Ministry within the framework of the measures in support of cultural and creative enterprises and of the international relaunching of Italy, centred on the Country’s profound vocation for culture, the performing arts and beauty.
