Marco Peronaci, currently Italy’s ambassador to NATO, will be the next Italian ambassador to the United States. His appointment was approved today by the Council of Ministers, following a proposal by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.  He succeeds Mariangela Zappia, the first woman to hold this position, who leaves the post after more than four years.

Peronaci was born in Pavia and holds a degree in Political Science from the University of “La Sapienza” in Rome. On February 13, 1989, following a competitive examination, he was appointed as a volunteer in the diplomatic service. At the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Farnesina), he began his career in the Directorate General for Emigration and Social Affairs.

On June 11, 1991, he was posted to Kampala as Second Commercial Secretary, later promoted to First Secretary. On October 18, 1993, he was assigned to Tokyo as Second Secretary, and subsequently First Secretary. Upon returning to the Ministry, Peronaci served in the Directorate General for Political Affairs and in the Directorate General for Personnel and Administration, where from December 1, 2000, he served as Head of Office III (DGPA). From August 1, 2002, he served as Counsellor in Paris, and on April 3, 2006, became First Counsellor at Italy’s Permanent Representation to the EU in Brussels.

Beginning March 27, 2009, he served as Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Justice. On June 19, 2012, he was granted the title and rank of Ambassador and appointed Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the European Union in Brussels. During Italy’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2014, he served as Chair of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper). From November 17, 2015, he served as Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of the Interior. At the Farnesina, from January 3, 2017, he held the post of Spokesperson for the Minister and Head of the Institutional Press and Communication Service.

Reporting directly to the Director General for the European Union from June 21, 2018, he was appointed Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for the Brexit process on October 11, 2018.

On February 20, 2020, he was granted the title and rank of Ambassador and appointed Permanent Representative of Italy to the Political and Security Committee of the European Union.

He is the author of essays and publications on European and Asian political affairs. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, by the Government of Japan. In 2018, he was named Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Sarà Marco Peronaci, attuale ambasciatore alla Nato, il nuovo ambasciatore italiano negli Stati Uniti.
La sua nomina è stata approvata oggi dal Consiglio dei Ministri, su proposta del Ministro degli Esteri Antonio Tajani. Subentra a Mariangela Zappia, prima donna a ricoprire questo ruolo, che lascia la sede dopo oltre quattro anni.

Peronaci è nato a Pavia ed è laureato in Scienze politiche all’Università “La Sapienza” di Roma. Il 13 febbraio 1989, in seguito ad esame di concorso, è stato nominato volontario nella carriera diplomatica. Alla Farnesina ha prestato servizio presso la Direzione Generale dell’Emigrazione e degli Affari Sociali.

L’11 giugno 1991 ha assunto come secondo segretario commerciale, poi primo segretario, a Kampala e il 18 ottobre 1993 come secondo segretario, poi primo segretario, a Tokyo. Rientrato al ministero, Peronaci ha prestato servizio presso la Direzione Generale degli Affari Politici e presso la Direzione Generale del Personale e dell’Amministrazione, dove dal 1° dicembre 2000 ha ricoperto l’incarico di capo dell’Ufficio III (DGPA). Dal 1° agosto 2002 ha ricoperto l’incarico di consigliere a Parigi e il 3 aprile 2006 ha assunto come primo consigliere alla Rappresentanza Permanente presso l’Ue a Bruxelles.

Dal 27 marzo 2009 ha prestato servizio come consigliere diplomatico del ministro presso il Ministero della Giustizia. Il 19 giugno 2012 è stato accreditato con titolo e rango di ambasciatore quale rappresentante permanente aggiunto d’Italia presso l’Unione Europea a Bruxelles e quale presidente del Coreper durante il semestre di Presidenza dell’Italia nel 2014. Dal 17 novembre 2015 ha prestato servizio come consigliere diplomatico del ministro presso il Ministero dell’Interno. Alla Farnesina, ha ricoperto dal 3 gennaio 2017 l’incarico di portavoce del ministro e capo del Servizio per la Stampa e la Comunicazione istituzionale.

Alle dirette dipendenze del Direttore Generale per l’Unione Europea dal 21 giugno 2018, ha ricoperto dall’11 ottobre 2018 l’incarico di inviato speciale del ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale per il processo Brexit.

Il 20 febbraio 2020 è stato accreditato con titolo e rango di ambasciatore quale Rappresentante Permanente d’Italia presso il Comitato Politico e di Sicurezza dell’Unione Europea.

È autore di saggi e pubblicazioni su temi di politica europea e asiatica. Nel 1998 ha ricevuto l’Ordine del Sacro Tesoro, Raggi dorati con Gran Collare del Giappone. Nel 2018 è stato insignito dell’onorificenza di Commendatore dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica italiana.
