Italian Researchers Abroad: Tajani brings Associations back into the Institutional Dialogue

De Furia: “An important first step toward strengthening ties with Italian research”

MIAMI – After several years, associations representing Italian researchers abroad are returning to the institutional dialogue with the Italian Government. The initiative, promoted by Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani, will include a roundtable discussion on November 4 in Reggio Calabria with the presidents of associations representing Italian researchers around the world, as part of the Conference of Scientific and Space Attachés and Agricultural Experts.

“This is an important step that we have been waiting for for a long time,” said Fabio De Furia, President of the Miami Scientific Italian Community and the California Scientific Italian Community. “We thank Minister Tajani for bringing associations representing Italian researchers abroad back to the center of the institutional dialogue.”

According to De Furia, Italian scientific communities around the world represent a strategic resource for the country. “We should not talk only about a ‘brain drain.’ Italian researchers abroad are part of an international network that can make a concrete contribution to research, innovation, and Italy’s growth.”
Among the issues to be discussed will be the possible creation of a Confederation of Associations of Italian Researchers Worldwide, with the goal of strengthening coordination and representation in their engagement with Italian institutions.

It should be noted, however, that the invitation to the ministerial roundtable did not include all associations of Italian researchers active around the world. “If the process moves forward toward the creation of a Confederation, it must be inclusive and provide for the participation of all active and representative organizations,” De Furia emphasized.

The request, therefore, is that future institutional roundtables be accompanied by clear, objective, and transparent participation criteria established by the Ministry. These criteria should ensure the broadest possible representation of associations of Italian researchers active around the world, guarantee equal access, avoid parochial or discretionary considerations, and recognize the concrete work carried out by individual scientific communities.
